Chris Stapleton delivered a soulful rendition of Willie Nelson's “Living in the Promiseland” during The Late Show with Stephen Colbert on Wednesday night (May 6).
The 12-time Grammy winner played the hopeful ballad, written by Nelson and David Lynn Jones, alongside Mickey Raphael. Nelson, who recently celebrated his 93rd birthday, released “Living in the Promiseland” on his 1986 record titled The Promiseland. He sings on the track: “Living in the promiseland/ Our dreams are made of steel/ The prayer of every man/ Is to know how freedom feels/ There is a winding road/ ‘Cross the shifting sands/ And room for everyone/ Living in the promiseland.”
Stapleton and Colbert raised a glass together after the performance, and Stapleton thanked the host “for all the good you’ve done for me and so many musicians who have come on this show. You’ve been very kind. Your entire staff is very kind. Thank you very much.”
Stapleton, who was nominated in six categories at the 61st ACM Awards, is getting ready to kick off a run of “All-American Road Show” dates with Lainey Wilson, Zach Top, Allen Stone, Ashley McBryde, Carter Faith, Grace Potter, Maggie Rose, Mike Campbell & The Dirty Knobs, Molly Tuttle, Nikki Lane and The Teskey Brothers at select stops.
