According to a release from the Georgia Bureau Investigation, an officer involved shooting that left one man dead in Centerville after three children were being held hostage by their father is now being investigated by GBI.

The Centerville Police Department responded to the call on Saturday. Upon arrival, officers met Shawn Michael Evanuk in the driveway

of the home. Evanuk appeared to be upset and barricaded himself and his children in the home, holding them hostage.

The Houston County Sheriff's Office called the Special Response Team (SRT) to the home and they were able to get Evanuk to release two of the children.

Negotiators were unable to communicate with Evanuk and say he was theatening to harm the 2-year-old child and burn down the house with them in it.

"Members of the SRT made entry into the residence. The SRT made contact with Evanuk who was armed with a knife. Verbal commands were given for Evanuk to put down the knife several times. At some point during the encounter, a struggle took place and Evanuk was shot one time by an SRT member. Evanuk was pronounced dead at the scene," said a release from the GBI.

Evanuk's body will be transported to the GBI Medical Examiner’s Office for an autopsy and the GBI will conduct an independent investigation. It will then be turned over to the Houston Judicial Circuit District Attorney’s Office for review.

Evanuk was out of jail on bond for simple battery family violence and part of the bond agreement was to stay away from the residence.
